Jessica is awesome! She has helped our family tremendously with our dogs and given us the confidence to handle them in any situation. Both of our dogs have learned proper leash walking, recall skills, as well as “settle” down on the mat. She also helped us to implement fun games and activities which keep them happy and engaged.

Our larger dog, Goose, is very high energy! He struggled with overexcitement and anxiety in the home and in new environments, which led to excessive barking, pulling on the leash and other difficult behaviors. Jessica’s training has taught us the techniques to manage his behavior and create an environment for learning and fun, wherever we go!

We are so happy with the training our dogs have received, and highly recommend Jessica to anyone looking for professional dog training in San Diego!

I'm a first time dog owner—with a fearful, anxious, reactive rescue. Due to his past trauma, we had frequent episodes of mouthing that was painful and scary. Jess Stone worked endlessly with us, going over and above to teach him how to take in his world and give him tools to manage his frustrations.

She helped me through a rehoming breakdown when I was afraid of him hurting me. I always believed in him, but I doubted my abilities many times. But Jess believed in both of us. When I couldn't carry the load, she was there for us.

Everyday I see him use the tools she taught him to correct himself to make good choices. I have a huge list of his accomplishments and polite behaviors in the house and walking on leash. She gave us both the tools to communicate and create a fun, trusting relationship despite his past trauma with other humans. We're still working on separation anxiety, which is a long process. Every day he gets better and better. She set us up with a routine and it turns out that his biggest fear is now one of his favorite parts of the day.

I could go on and on, but there's one thing I must mention to dog owners with rescues, especially traumatized rescues. Had I gone with another local trainer (that I paid for an in-home consult that was ended up being a hustle to get me to purchase training) I'm certain this dog would be a danger to me and others. The other trainer used traditional/aversive conditioning which would have been so detrimental to his mental health. I feel fortunate that I took a chance and made the decision to pay for a consultation with Instinct. I was both hesitant and skeptical, but the first in-home consult with Instinct taught me so much. It changed everything I knew about dogs. The consult alone put us on the right track.

I am deeply grateful for the expertise, compassion, and commitment, and continued resources that all of the trainers at Instinct bring. They are truly changing the lives of these beautiful dogs to be happy, healthy, enriched, and well behaved. It's been a long journey for us. They've been there for everything I've needed and more, including phone calls at 9:30pm on a Friday night when he was in the ER and help on holiday weekends.

I would keep adding stars to my review if it was an option. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you to the entire team.

My Goldendoodle Hudson and I made major life changes during the pandemic - including a cross country move. Not long after, he began having issues with stress and separation, things I had never seen before in him. I worked on ways to get him back to his old self for months, but with little success. Finally, I decided to seek professional help. I was connected with Ashley C. who was so incredibly helpful and without a doubt, knows her stuff.

Her expertise, compassion, and love of animals is apparent. She walked into each of our sessions with such ease and always had an answer for any questions I had regarding how to manage certain behaviors. She was open to different training session locations, including our very last one, which was spent outdoors at a coffee shop. It's always been a goal of mine to get Hudson out in a public setting, and I am so glad we were able to do so! Having Ashley by my side to manage his behaviors, provide suggestions, and be a source of encouragement has made me a much more confident dog owner, which has made Hudson a happier dog.

I would highly recommend Instinct Dog Behavior & Training to anyone who is considering it. Much like kiddos, dogs (and more specifically, their owners) need guidance and tools to manage their behavior and these folks are definitely the experts! Because of Ashley's dedication to me and Hudson, Hudson's anxiety has practically disappeared and I am able to have my life back.

Where to begin…Jessica at Instinct has given us the tools to help our two dogs make their way to becoming friends again after a few fighting incidents. Not only that but as individuals they have show SIGNIFICANT improvement in self control, listening, and less reactive behavior. We really could not recommend her business and they’re use of positive reinforcement to help us have even better pets than we originally thought.

I had such a great experience at Instinct! Jess helped me to identify my dog's aggression as fear-based, which put us in the right direction for training. She gave me detailed homework for helping my dog feel more comfortable and confident so that we were working towards our goals outside of our training sessions. I loved all the literature that was shared with me about dog welfare and health, too. She also gave me suggestions on how to talk with my vet about Penny's anxiety.
Jess set me up with all the tools I needed so that even 4 months out from our last session, Penny continues to make daily progress. The alumni classes are an additional amazing option that allow me to practice all the skills Penny has been learning in a controlled environment.
Instinct trained me so I could train Penny and I'm so grateful to have found them!

Jess Stone was absolutely fantastic with Glitchie (g), my little rescue. g was a pandemic puppy and while incredibly playful was very nervous about encountering people and dogs in our housing area, which manifested as aggression. This was the 3rd trainer, and the prior trainers had used methods that had no staying power, and left her (and me) more stressed out. Jess by contrast was great; I watched g pick up life-skills to help her diffuse her energy and anxieties in amazing ways. Jess cares deeply and addresses the behavior 'issues' at various scales and in multiple environments. I knew training a dog would also mean training myself, but was surprised by how much I learned about myself and g. Jess was patient, kind, but also vigilant while I got used to the steep learning curve of dealing with a very energetic and leash aggressive dog. It's been over 5 months since we did the in-home training, and g has retained all the life-skills Jess taught her :). I look forward to booking follow-ups in the future. I can't recommend Jess highly enough!

We LOVE Jessica! We were referred to Instinct by our veterinarian after a horrendous experience with another trainer and could not be more grateful we found her. We have two adopted, high-energy medium sized dogs (and live in a small home with 20-month old twins....chaos!). Our dogs feed off of each others' energy in a way that has produced a number of problematic behaviors, ultimately resulting in incidents of aggression between our dogs that had us very worried. From our first interaction, Jessica hit the ground running with multiple recommendations to help us modify our environment to reduce problem behaviors immediately while she worked to establish foundational behavior changes, which takes time. We immediately found a degree of relief from these recommendations. Regarding the training itself, I distinctly remember the first day that Jessica came to our home to train, my husband (who works from home & I go into the office) sent me an update saying, "I'm back in my office staying out of the way....I don't know what she's doing out there but I hear a calming, loving voice giving them sweet encouragement and whatever she's doing, it's working." And that proved true with each session. Over time, we saw significant changes in our dogs behavior and ability to cope with stressful situations. Jessica is thorough, professional, organized, a wealth of knowledge and recommendations, and a skilled trainer. Working with her changed my skillset as a dog-owner and gave us the tools significantly reduce the chaos in our home. Jessica holds a very special place in our hearts and we highly recommend her.

Ashley was amazing in helping us learn how to work with our pup Rosie. We’ve had Rosie for two years and avoided situations that brought her to points of reactivity. This meant almost never having anyone over to our home and when people did come over it was an extremely stressful situation for us. When we discovered we were expecting our first child we knew something had to change. We we’re at our breaking point and considered re-homing her, but she’s a part of our family and we wanted to do what we could to keep her with us. After training we feel very confident in our ability to keep stress levels low and still have people over! (We also learned how to work with her reactivity to other dogs!) she’s improved so much and surprises us every day- we’re so proud and grateful. She’s not “cured” per-say but there’s been tremendous improvement and we have all the tips and tricks to bring down the intensity level and keep everyone safe and happy, we couldn’t ask for anything more!
